Altadis Tobacco Company, which owns Gauloises and Gitanes brands, refused to merge with competitor Imperial Tobacco, which is famous for Davidoff cigarettes and West brands.
According to experts the bargain could allow Imperial Tobacco to fortify its positions in the struggle with leading tobacco companies of the world - Philip Morris, Japan Tobacco and British American Tobacco.
In March Imperial Tobacco offered $15 billions for Altadis's assets. After the governing body of the company rejected the bargain, the British raised their offering to $16,1 billions. However, the governing body of Altadis decided that it wasn't enough to absorb the company.
Nevertheless, after the refusal Imperial Tobacco, which is the fourth tobacco producer in the world, claimed that its opinion concerning the perspective merging with Altadis remained unchangeable.
The brokers' boards responded to the news from Altadis by selling shares of tobacco companies. The value of Gauloises capital issues receded on %0,5, and the Imperial Tobacco capital issues - on %0,3.
Smokers riot in Venezuela
