Fat Can Also be Beautiful

Fat Can Also be Beautiful

Cigars with a large diameter are once again trendy. Many producers have launched cigars with a larger than usual diameter on the market in recent years. In the extensive testing of "Ring Gauge 52+" (more than 20.64 mm), the European Cigar Cult Journal features a selection of these cigars.

However a larger diameter, consequently "fatter" cigars, doesn't mean that they are necessarily large cigar sizes. The trend in smoking is heading rather in the direction of cigars which are shorter lengthwise than larger ones. That is also directly affected by aficionados' availability of time. Last but not least, the extensive smoking restrictions cause the cigar lover to reach for shorter cigars with a shorter smoking duration. Large calibers are smoked predominantly in a private environment. Robusto, corona and torpedo sizes are therefore rather in fashion. Smaller sizes can also have a large diameter. However, one is in this case experiencing difficulty with the classification. The range of Cuban sizes normally ends at the ring gauge of 52 (2.64 cm) and the Cubans also have their own terms concerning sizes, into which very thick cigars do not fit.

New format designations have to be "invented". Concerning this, the non-Cuban production world has it easier. Thicker cigars are simply rolled under the classical designation of sizes. Period.

Thick cigars also do not automatically have to mean a strong smoke. Everything depends on the blend of the tobaccos used. As the tasting shows, many cigars with a large diameter are also of a very light structure. Concerning havanas, large ring gauges are rather the exception. In recent years they have been used mainly for the limited special editions. In the USA, the smoker has already been spoiled for a long time with thick cigars. This trend is now also en vogue in Europe and the rest of the world.

The extensive tasting for the European Cigar Cult Journal was logistically and organizationally prepared in two sessions in Zurich and Vienna by René Wagner, the experienced cigar professional and tobacconist from Zurich. The new "Nine" bar and restaurant in Zurich made available both its premises and its refined cuisine for this "big smoke".
